«Fuckin' With My Head von Bl'ast habe auf einem Mixtape vor einigen Jahren kennen gelernt. Ich war zwölf Jahre alt und hab The Offspring und Rage Against The Machine gehört und gefeiert. Das war ein ziemlicher Kontrast. Ich weiss gar nicht so genau warum, aber der Song ist seit dem mehr oder minder konstant in meinem Kopf präsent. Und ich habe noch nicht mal die Platte oder ein Mp3 davon. Die Kassette ist mittlerweile auch unauffindbar. Egal. Schöne Mischung aus amerikanischen Westküsten-Punk und... äh... Die Band hatte es nun mal geschafft, das konservative England richtig, richtig zu schocken. Aber das sind so Geschichten, die ich ja auch nur aus Büchern kenne. Und Punk sollte nicht in Büchern oder Geschichten von alten Herren stattfinden. Oh wait...»

«Ich glaube die Tatsache, dass L.I.E.S. dem Punk sehr nahe ist, hat vor allem einen geographischen Grund:

 

New York war - wenn man den überlieferten Stories Glauben schenkt - wohl schon sehr früh eine der Städte, wo die verschiedenen Jugendkulturen nicht nur neben- sondern miteinander existierten. Und eine davon war damals eben die NYHC New York Hardcore Szene. Diese war für viele heranwachsende Kids nicht unwichtig, weil es da auch Sunday Matinee-Shows ohne Altersbeschränkung gab. War man unter 21 und wollte trotzdem was erleben, so bot sich diese Kultur entsprechend an. Dass durch diesen frühen Zugang auch früh eine Haltung geformt werden kann, wäre eine Erklärung.

Allgemein gesprochen und nicht nur auf L.I.E.S. bezogen war die DIY-Labelkultur extrem wichtig, weil diese sich auch über Musikgrenzen hinweg etabliert hat. Und diese hat sich nun mal aus dem Punk-Gedanken heraus entwickelt.»

Punk Auswuchs

 

«Was die Musik anbelangt, so hab ich mich eigentlich nie für den klassischen 77er Punk interessiert. Ich fand die Auswüchse davon immer spannender. Die Anfänge vom Industrial, New Wave oder natürlich auch Hardcore-Punk… da fühlte und fühle ich mich am meisten zuhause. Ich finde es spannend, wenn verschiedene Elemente zusammengefügt werden. Sei es auf rein musikalischer Ebene oder auch wenn es um eine Medium-übergreifende Ästhetik geht. Es gab wohl schon immer einen Graben zwischen der Working Class und den Art Students. Das wurde dann auch ideologisch so aufgebauscht, nun wie dem auch sei, ich war halt nie Working Class. Und ich finde den Anspruch, dass Punk auch klug sein darf gar nicht mal so doof.»

Punk Definition

 

«Für mich ist Punk in erster Linie an eine DIY- und gesellschaftskritische Attitüde gebunden. Ich glaube ausserdem, dass Punk den Grundstein gelegt hat für zig folgende Jugendkulturen und das, was man im Allgemeinen als Independent Musikszene bezeichnet. Punk ist aber auch etwas sehr konservatives mit vielen Regeln. Und: Punk ist alt geworden.»
